Permanence, according to the Merriam-Webster dictionary, means “the quality or state of being permanent”. Permanent means “continuing or enduring without fundamental or marked change”. The idea of permanence is interesting because I have often wondered if anything in life could be permanent. I still haven’t come across anything that can be physically permanent. The sturdiest of structures will inevitably fall without support and even objects designed to bend can and will decay over time. Emotional permanence doesn’t make much sense either because emotions are like water. Shifting and ever-changing. There are times when I wonder how we even invented the word. The fascinating thing is that we did. We do have a concept of what permanent means even though the physical and emotional world offer no clear examples. It is a concept that stirs something in us, a longing perhaps. Our hope is that this month we can reflect on that longing for permanence as well as its source. That we can find comfort in the assurance that we are eternal and permanent beings created by an eternal and permanent God.
