The Light that Shines Through

This poem was borne of a faulty curtain. There’s one small segment that does not get covered by the curtain no matter how many times I shift it. It’s been that way for years. This month is about exploring permanence. Though it feels as though my curtain will be permanently crooked, I know that’s not true. Things change. People and nature will change. Still, we will have a permanent home one day and that will allow us to weather any storm of change in this life.

There’s a sliver in the corner of my window
Where the light shines through.
It creates a single column of light.
There are times I run my fingers through it
To remind myself that light cuts through the darkness.
It’s an eternal truth.
When it gets dark outside the moonlight
Travels through the same column.
The sliver that helps us get through the night.
And if moonlight isn’t available there are always stars
To remind myself that light cuts through the darkness.
It’s an eternal promise.
Oh, it seems unfair at times.
Those celestial beings on the same cycles
Granting us the same light.
While our world changes every day.
I ask sometimes why we were not born to permanence in this life?
A question for when I forget the purpose of the light.
To shower us with glimpses of the world to come.
A reminder that this ever-changing land
And our ever-changing hearts are not our home.
There’s a sliver in the corner of my window
Where the light shines through.
It creates a single column of light.
There are times I run my fingers through it
To remind myself that light cuts through the darkness.
It’s our eternal home.
