Permanent Markings

One of my favorite songs of all time is “Everybody Wants to Rule the World” by Tears for Fears. I like it for a variety of reasons, but one line stands out to me: “All for freedom and for pleasure.” An echo of a longing that humans have for freedom and happiness. Only we go about it in all the wrong ways until we find true freedom and everlasting joy in Christ. Part of moving past perfectionism is realizing that we cannot achieve that innermost desire on our own power. Doesn’t matter how holy we think we are, especially when God sees the inner workings of our hearts. Let us come to Jesus when that inner struggle persists and lay it at his feet.

Forward into the spiral of my stainless existence.
Into the pointed edge of my holiness, like true rain.
Above the rules even I set for myself.
Becoming blind was an aftereffect.
My mortal nature wages war with the one I wanted.
To be like a god and free myself from the chains.
Yet, when you can’t live because running from the truth is, in fact—
Not living.
We must die to ourselves to live again.
The chains that held as I paraded my innocence
Gave me permanent scars.
On a physical body that is only on loan.
Upward to the eternal coast I saw my mistake.
Raindrops take on a spherical form when not falling.
I am a child of the only One who can break any chains.
Born in Eden with no markings
Walking alongside our Creator
We are now but a breath, fleeting.
Until we are made perfect in Jesus.
