In this week’s poem, I portray our families of origin as lighthouses we rely on to light our path as we go through life. I pray that you are comforted by the knowledge that Jesus will light your path no matter what type of family you come from.
Some of us were seafarers born in a broken lighthouse,
With shards of glass all over the floor,
The spiral staircase lined with cracks,
A deck that no longer has its railing,
And a lantern that produces no light.
These conditions are unfortunate within themselves,
But the world is in a state of continuous night,
All of its inhabitants fast asleep,
Waiting to wake up with the breaking of the morning light.
But what can born seafarers do?
When to live is to traverse through the treacherous waters in the night,
But the lighthouse they rely on produces no light?
They can only weep and wait for morning to come.
Those of us born in an upkept lighthouse are really no better off.
Though the railing is intact,
The staircase sturdy,
The windows unbroken,
And the lantern shooting forth beams of light,
The guidance and support received does not sustain,
Because no lighthouse will last forever,
It will eventually lose the ability to shine light.
So what can born seafarers do?
When to live is to traverse through the treacherous waters in the night,
And the lighthouse they rely on can only emit a temporary light?
They too weep and wait for the morning to come.
So it stands then,
That an enduring light that shines in the darkness is needed,
Until the morning comes.
And praise be to God,
That there is an eternal light ready to shine on us,
If we open our hearts to him.
So no matter what kind of lighthouse you come from,
All can find comfort in Jesus.
