Loneliness As a Compass

I have heard someone say that emotions are good indicators. And I think I very much agree with that statement. To the point where as I wrote this poem. Where I imagined how the feeling of loneliness might be an indicator. That can lead us to a place of fulfillment. If you are feeling lonely, I pray that you will be led to deeper relationship with God and community. Slowly entering into a place of contentment.

When I feel cold isolation encircle me,
With a chill that freezes my heart so that it feels heavy,
I see it,
Faintly when I close my eyes,
A small golden compass,
Slightly rusted,
It’s needle resting just above a capital S indicating South,
Pointing away from the faded red N that sits at the top of its face.
Everytime I see it my eyebrows narrow,
And a crease begins to form in my forehead,
As I can never understand why it is pointing South,
I thought all compasses pointed north?
What is wrong with it?
Is it indicating that my direction,
That my focus is off?
If so,
Loneliness might not just be a feeling,
But maybe it is a compass,
That can show me when I need more depth in community,
When I need to change course and lean further into communion with God.
It might just be a symptom,
That indicates the true direction I am headed in.
