In this poem I explore loneliness in relation to hatred. All of us have experienced hating others or even ourselves, and I think that hatred in itself can make us lonely and isolated. But we are never truly alone as Christ followers. I pray that you are reminded to look to Jesus for comfort whenever you feel lonely. And remember that he will never leave you nor forsake you.
Is loneliness a form of hatred?
The space we inhabit when we keep others far away,
With half-hearted attempts to make them stay,
Because we fear being alone,
But also hate others and ourselves,
Because it’s difficult to love the imperfect,
Even though that’s all we have.
What if that isn’t true?
What if there is some perfection to hold onto,
A perfection that seeks us out,
Loves us when we are unlovable,
And can supersede our hatred?
Maybe there is a space that we can inhabit,
That brings us close to life,
To God himself,
And to others around us.
And the identity of that space,
Jesus.
