The Insurmountable Wall

This poem takes language from Psalms 46:9. Imagery that emphasizes the power of God as a fortress for those who trust in him. As you go through this week I pray that God will give you peace. A peace that remains and gives rest to your soul. Peace be with you.

There’s an insurmountable wall that divides us,
It’s breadth is immeasurably wide,
And it’s height extends to the heavens.
It’s you against me,
Me unforgiving of you,
Us resentful of them,
Them angry at us,
And all screaming, “We just want peace!”
The wall is structurally unsound,
And our raging emotions and screaming,
Will eventually cause this wall to come crumbling down.
And what will we do then?
When we truly see each other.
Will we put down our spears,
Our bows and arrows,
And make peace?
Or will we attack each other upon sight?
In truth,
This wall was our feeble attempt to keep the peace,
We built it up high to the heavens,
And it has stood in judgement over us,
Its verdict,
Blindness.
Deemed incapable of maintaining civility amongst ourselves,
It decided the best course of action was to remove our sight of each other,
And so the wall hid us from one another,
And division became our salvation.
And what a fragile salvation it is.
We could no longer see,
But only hear each other’s voices,
And that did not quench the hatred burning in our hearts,
So when this wall falls what will become of us?
We must trust something higher than this wall,
Something that will not crumble from the force of our emotions and screams,
Something that is far above the heavens,
And can give us peace.
There is only one who can make wars to cease,
Who breaks the bow and shatters the spear,
The God Almighty.
Let us quiet our voices,
Set down our weapons,
And seek peace from him.
