The Friendship Toll and I’d Do It All Again

Friendship is one of the most important parts of our lives. We depend on our friends for support through difficult times as well as fun times. Humans were created for companionship and the bible highlights what it means to be a good and true friend. In Proverbs, God shares wisdom that a friend loves at all times. A brother is there for a time of adversity. In John, Jesus tells us that there is no greater love than laying your life down for a friend. These verses show us what is truly important in friendship. In the day-to-day, it can be difficult to value our friendships. That’s why this week I have two poems about friendship. The first was written when I was going through a difficult time with one of my closest friends. There are seasons of adversity that all relationships must go through. In the end, we built a stronger more lasting friendship. The second poem about my feelings after we were solid once more. I pray that this month you can reflect on your own friendships. Bring them before God. Ask God to preserve and protect them.

Poem #1: The friendship toll
I’m sorry my ideas don’t fit in your head.
The circumference of choice is infinite.
I’m sorry my support was not enough for you
Your weight was too much for my gravity.
I’m sorry I have to go away.
My mind needs space from the now constant rain.
I’m sorry my heart won’t let me tell you
My strained soul can barely whisper.
Just outside the realm of “I’m sorry” exists us,
The way we used to be
Just outside the door is my universe,
The one you never understood.

Poem #2: I’d do it all again
And it isn’t that there isn’t any pain.
It echoes.
Brings back a friend or two.
And it isn’t that we didn’t think we would fall.
It hurts.
Softly was an unknown word.
And it isn’t that suffering won’t visit once more.
It overstays.
Strongest endurance snaps.
It’s that in the end, all of that didn’t matter.
It ended.
Our world began anew.
It isn’t that I don’t have any regrets.
It weighs.
To hear well done I’d do it all again.
