Twisted Roots

This poem talks about the broader family that God welcomes us into when we believe and trust in his son Jesus. We all come from various types of families and backgrounds. And often, we end up with wounds from our families. Whether they were good to us or caused us much sorrow. But God redeems and broadens our family when we accept him as Lord. And we receive more brothers and sisters, mothers and fathers, than we can even count. And I think we often don’t recognize it. I sure don’t. These new familial relationships can be just as complicated as the ones we are naturally born into, but God gives us grace. And holds us all together in him. So that we can love and be loved within both our natural and spiritual families. I pray this week that you feel and express God’s love, and are able to see even more clearly the family he has given us all.

“I love you”, you spoke,
And in response,
I felt my roots expand,
Lengthen and stretch,
Further into the soil beneath me,
Embracing the nutrients that keep me strong,
Sinking deeper into what is lasting,
Consistent,
Permanent.
Those were not simple words,
But truth that gives me space to belong,
In an unwelcoming landscape,
That is unable to recognize my twisted roots.
Your words reminded me of a broader reality,
That life is more than dirt and roots.
That there’s sunlight and rain,
Day and night,
Wind and stars,
Rainbows and dark clouds,
Promise and hope,
And a God that has welcomed me into his family.
Restoring my past,
Ensuring my future,
Broadening my family,
So that neither twisted nor flawless roots matter,
But only Jesus.
Uniting the earthly and spiritual family as one,
That he has made you and me apart of.
