This Temporary Silence

I have found myself utterly exhausted during this Christmas season. Trying to meet every commitment, purchase every present, and prepare myself for the new year. It wasn’t until I went to church on Christmas Eve that I felt my body begin to relax. Because all of those things are good, but only one thing is truly needed. Remembering and rejoicing in the peace and salvation that Jesus has brought us. This poem comes from that moment when I relaxed for a little bit and focused on what truly mattered. I hope that you had a Merry Christmas, and that Jesus will be your focus into the new year.

Open your heart,
Open your eyes,
Relax your busy hands.
That you may see and listen,
That you may perceive and understand.
Creation has gone silent in anticipation,
Our bodies are humming with expectation,
For the end to meet the beginning,
And for everything to be what it once was.
It’s only a few moments away now,
Within eternity’s standards,
That which was twisted has been made straight,
That which was lost has been found.
The light has shone on our darkness,
Jesus has removed what once bound us,
And there is only one thing left to be done,
The new creation.
Where sin and death will be no more,
And the trees, mountains, and brooks,
The meadows, sea, and sky,
Will end their temporary silence,
To sing a new song.
“Glory to God in the highest,
To the lamb that was slain,
For he has made all things new.”
The old is passing away,
And the new has begun.
Even now we can see traces of it,
If we rest our hands,
Open our hearts and abide,
In the author and performer of our salvation,
So lift up your voice now,
Within this temporary silence,
And sing a new song,
To Jesus.
