In The Space Between

In preparation for writing this poem, I meditated on God’s grace. As I was thinking deeply, verse 10 from Psalm 103 stood out to me. “He does not treat us as our sins deserve or repay us according to our iniquities.” God’s natural disposition is to show us mercy even though we deserve judgment. His deep desire is to work things for our good, and it pleases him to do so. As you read, I pray that your awe of God increases more and more.

God’s heart beat,
A sound,
A contraction,
That pumps life and love,
Through all that is and will be,
Is a wonder,
That resides eons and galaxies away,
From the weak human heart,
That cannot beat on its own,
That is confined to the boundaries of the earth,
And drips with malice and envy.
Such distant and opposing hearts,
Should never come in contact with each other,
But located in the space between them,
Woven into the fabric of reality,
Is an unfathomable mercy,
An immeasurable grace,
That swallows the distance whole,
And connects the two hearts.
Bringing the human heart to life,
If it wishes to be,
So that it beats on account of God’s heart,
Merging the sound of the two beats,
Until they are the sound of one.
A phenomenon that costs nothing,
But is the incomprehensible outcome of God’s overflowing grace.
