I think we all know that feeling. The feeling of wanting someone to “pay” or to “get their just desserts”. There is no shortage of TV shows, books, and movies on the subject. It’s the reason we have a justice system at all. To prevent individuals from seeking revenge on others in unjust ways. The bible teaches us about revenge in both the old and new testaments.

“Vengeance is mine, and recompense, for the time when their foot shall slip; for the day of their calamity is at hand, and their doom comes swiftly.” (Deuteronomy 32:35, ESV)

“Beloved, never avenge yourselves, but leave it to the wrath of God, for it is written, “Vengeance is mine, I will repay, says the Lord.” (Romans 12:19, ESV).

This tells us, quite clearly, that vengeance belongs to God. He is our Judge and therefore responsible for ensuring that justice is served. Not us. Even though our anger and devastation may lead us to think otherwise. Only a perfect God can truly be fair in a world tainted by sin. How can we as imperfect, sinful humans be impartial in our judgments? We have law and order, but as we all know that only goes so far and the “system” is filled with corruption. That is why, as Christians, we need to rely on God’s judgment and not let the enemy trick us into avenging others’ ourselves. It will only lead to death and pain for those involved. Whereas Jesus’s path brings light and true justice. This month let us pray to God that we would listen and be still, and trust in Him.
