Sometimes when I hear old songs like “The Very Thought of You” by Ray Noble, I think to myself who would I be if I lived in a different age. Most likely I’d be the same romantic, dreamer, and introvert I am today. Just with a corset perhaps. This poem is built from a place of nostalgia for a life I never lived. Because when I think of trust I think of my grandmother. The one who never gave up telling others about God. She knew the way home. Through God alone. So walk these steps with me. With all of Christ’s followers. Let’s walk home.
All life is a memory
Pockets of joy buried in seas of hardships.
I remember you like it was yesterday.
As tears stream from my face
I remember the tide.
The force that connected you and I.
That tunnel we tried to bury so deep.
In our eyes we reflect who we once were.
The smiling, wrinkle free faces that didn’t shed a tear for the future.
Didn’t fear the future.
No we relished in the salty sting on our tongues.
We wanted to grow up more than breathing until breathing was the one thing we could do.
I wanted to hold you until we were one until holding you was the only thing we could do.
Oh, that bright thing in my eye is still here.
Though I’m wrinkled and smiling. I am that girl I once was.
The one who laughed endlessly and looked for joy in the butterflies of life.
The one who should have said I love you more but was too afraid sometimes.
And we’ll remember the small moments that made us giants.
The despair that gripped us when we almost said goodbye.
But we didn’t.
The air between us became ours once more.
Oh why do we hate getting older when the memories are sweeter than chocolate sometimes.
And reliving those feelings, a balm when the storms rage.
A shelter for our troubled hearts.
An ache so painful for all that has passed.
A prayer of thanksgiving to the God who holds us forever.
Let that sink in.
Forever.
So young one give your heart away.
Tear through the walls you built to protect yourself.
You don’t need them.
To shine, to live the way God created you to.
Because you only have one life.
Only steps across this wasteland.
Some you’ll take with others.
Some you’ll take alone.
But every step forwards is a step home.
