This poem is inspired by John 7:37-39. When Jesus talks about lliving water that will cause us to never thirst again. I imagine that we can drink hatred just as much as we can drink this living water that Jesus offers. As you read, I pray that you think on the living water that Jesus offers, and are encouraged to let go of any hatred.
As a clear liquid,
Hatred sparkles as it reflects the sunlight,
Mildly warm to the touch,
And offering a promise,
To make a cold heart as warm as the rays of the sun.
Most don’t intentionally choose hate,
The drink they reach for is anger,
Sometimes their hands grasp for contempt,
But when such emotions are left unattended to in the sun’s heat,
Their temporal nature evaporates,
And hatred is formed.
Sweet to the tip of the tongue,
Smooth and gentle down the throat,
Hatred is difficult to resist,
When it gives purpose,
A sense of momentum toward justice,
As it sets hearts on fire.
But hearts are tender and fire burns,
And hatred takes much more than it gives,
Amplifying hurt,
And failing to satiate thirst.
Many have searched far and wide,
And only one drink has been found that can quench thirst,
Warm hearts,
Give lasting purpose and provide justice,
Living water given by God.
