This poem came from my meditation on Jonah 2:7-8. Jonah states, “When my life was fainting away, I remembered the LORD, and my prayer came to you, into your holy temple. Those who pay regard to vain idols forsake their hope of steadfast love.” As Christians, we are the temple of the Holy Spirit when he comes and dwells within us. And I think we often can forget the wonder of that. How astonishing that truly is. And when we are in despair as Jonah was, it is the place where God meets us. His temple.
There’s a place that we have forgotten,
Both its sacredness and wonder.
The steadfast love of the creator envelops the created,
His presence is life itself.
He hears us,
His Spirit dwells within us,
And his power transforms us,
In his holy temple.
