This poem focuses in on the fear of the Lord. Proverbs 1:7 states that the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom. Some questions often come to my mind when I hear this. Is this fear a reverence that brings us closer to God? Or do we become terrified of him? As you read, I pray that your heart is opened to the great love that God has for you.
Your love floats above the trees.
It sends the wind forward,
And gives flight to fragile beauty,
Butterfly wings.
To us,
To fear seemed harsh,
Our gentle wings could not sustain such altitudes,
And we were content to bloom as the flowers do,
To transform but remain close to the ground we came from.
The intentions of our hearts were misguided,
We no longer belonged to the earth,
But were free beings,
Striving to live as though we were not.
To keep from trembling,
To keep safe.
But then the wind spoke to us,
And coaxed us upward,
“To fear the Lord is to revere him,”
It said,
“To revere is to love,
And to love is to be free.”
We trusted the wind and spread our wings,
And you lifted us up,
To the place where your love resides,
And our butterfly wings flutter over the trees.
