Things That Stay

In this poem, I talk about the wrestling within ourselves that many of us experience. It’s difficult sometimes to choose things that give life when the things that inhibit us feel safer. We don’t always choose correctly, and it’s only God’s grace that carries us safely through life when our hearts resist good things. As you read, I hope you remember that God’s grace is always sufficient for you. And his strength is your security.

I’m disappointed in myself,
I keep choosing things that sprout wings and fly away,
Forced things that soar but always fail me.
The things that are for me feel unnatural,
They wrap around my heart,
And redirect my desires,
Demanding patience and trust.
I resist.
Because things that stay require my whole heart,
They require forgiveness,
And evoke a feeling of falling with nothing to hold onto.
As I fall,
There is only one thing that gives me a handhold to grasp onto,
Courage to reach out and imperfectly choose the things that are real,
God’s Grace.
