Streams of Comfort

I think it is easy to get lost in the need to achieve and accomplish in our current world. And in that place grace is unfathomable. We don’t have a concept of receiving any good without doing something to deserve it. God’s grace asks for nothing and gives us everything we could possibly need in return. As we end our month-long discussion on God’s grace. I pray that you lean into his grace this week, and remember that it is sufficient for you.

The foundational structures in life,
Built only of accomplishment, merit and glory,
Seem incapable of withstanding the erosion of time.
The future forgets the achievements of the past,
And only faint echoes of them remain.
Our eyes focus on what is ahead,
Not seeing our hands closed tightly in fists at our sides,
Not noticing our desperation to hold on to these eroding structures,
As they slip through our fingers.
And so we resist God’s grace,
As it requires the opening up of our hands,
To allow both striving and earning to slip away.
Within God’s grace we lose something,
But gain something even better.
Love, joy, and peace that grows,
A foundational structure that does not erode away.
And the burden of life,
To produce purpose, meaning, and happiness,
Is lifted from us,
As we rely wholly on God to sustain us.
